Fuerteventura

Fuerteventura is perhaps most famous for it's beaches, with over 50km of stunning white and golden sand. Despite Tourism being a relatively recent phenomenon on the island, there is a well developed infrastructure with Golf Courses, a Zoo, a Water Park and numerous Marine Excursions. If you fancy something a bit more active, the Island offers great Surfing, Windsurfing and Kite Surfing as well as Big Game Fishing and Diving.

Currency

Spain's official currency is the Euro (EUR). One Euro is divided into 100 cents. Banks give the best rates but money can be exchanged at bureaux de change and major hotels. Traveller's cheques and major credit cards are accepted at most hotels, restaurants, and shops. ATMs are widespread and are generally the cheapest and most convenient method of obtaining money.

Attractions

This place is dotted with museums, archaeological sites, national parks, historical and ancient cities. A wide range of expeditions, boat trips and ventures to surrounding resorts, towns and historic sites is a must. Oasis Park La Lajita, Poblado de La Atalayita, Cueva del Llano, Caleta de Fuste are just among the few that are worth visiting.

Language

Spanish is the official language. English is understood in tourist areas. Catalan, Galician and Basque are spoken in the relevant areas.

Shopping

Shopping in Fuerteventura is so much fun that you would find it hard to stop. It is a shopper's paradise. This city is dotted with numerous shopping centres to suit every taste. There are shops that offer from clothes shops to perfumes, jewellery, electrical goods, shoes, toys, games, gadgets and more. Corralejo Shopping, Caleta de Fuste Shopping, Puerto del Rosario Shopping, uerto del Rosario Shopping and Morro Jable shopping are just among the few of the shopping centres that are worth visiting.

Restaurants

Fuerteventura is dotted with numerous restaurants that suit everybody taste. Most of the restaurants that offer mouth watering delight from traditional Turkish cuisines to other international cuisines. Most of the local food is fish. Pejines (tiny dried fish) and queso majorero' a local goats milk cheese is lip smacking and the most recommended one. Rosie O' Grady's, Corner House, Restaurante San Borondon and Spaghetti Castle are just among the few of the restaurants that are popular among tourists.

Nightlife

Fuerteventura is captivating place for the night birds. This beautiful place has numerous pubs, clubs and bars which party on until late. Fuerte British Bars, Corralejo, Rock Island Bar and Winter Garden are just among the few that really make you rock. Missing an experience of the vibrant nightlife in Fuerteventura, would make your travel an incomplete one.

Activities

This magnificent island is an ideal place for a wide variety of outdoor activities, from surfing, fishing, skiing, camping, hiking, boating, bike trails, windsurfing and scuba diving to hill walking, fishing, kite boarding ,swimming, sea kayaking, canoeing, golf and many more. Tourists must hire water sports equipments like surf boards, boogie boards, canoes and sea kayaks to enjoy the activities. Harbours at the beach offer a variety of boating activities. Visitors can charter a motor or sailing yacht.

Tipping

Service charges are included in most hotels and restaurants, but additional tips are welcome. In well-known restaurants 10% tip is expected. Some bills have value-added-tax designated as I.V.A and should not be mistaken for a service charge. Taxi drivers expect small tips and 5-10% is customary for most services rendered.

Time Description

Local time is GMT +1 (GMT +2 between the last Sunday in March and the Saturday before the last Sunday in October). The Canary Islands: GMT (GMT +1 in summer).

Communications

No health risks associated with travel to Spain. There are no vaccination certificates are required. Spain has an agreement with most EU countries to provide emergency health care on the same terms as Spanish nationals. EU travellers should carry the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). It doe not cover ongoing illnesses so travel insurance is advised.

Safety

There is a risk of international terrorism, but the risk to tourists is low. Spain is mostly trouble-free, but for street crime, which is common in big cities. Travellers must be cautious to avoid theft of passports, credit cards, travel documents and money. Strangers offering or asking for help of any kind, is often a distraction for accomplices. Visitors must be aware of the scams involving letters sent. The letter could state that the visitor has outstanding traffic fines or that they have won a Spanish lottery; the money has to be deposited in a bank account before a certain date.

Customs

Stiff fines will be imposed for smoking in enclosed public spaces or areas where food is prepared and sold, public transport, designated areas of bars and restaurants, and any places that cater for children. Smoking in public places is banned It is illegal to drink alcohol in the streets of Madrid, and in the Canary and Balearic Islands.

Duty Free

Travellers over 17 years arriving from non-EU countries do not pay duty on 200 cigarettes or 100 cigarillos or 50 cigars or 250g smoking tobacco. 1 litre spirits with alcohol content higher than 22% or 2 litres dessert wine not exceeding 22%, sparkling wine and 2 litres still wine; perfume up to 50g and 250ml eau de toilette. Travellers over 15 years do not pay duty on 500g coffee or 200g coffee extract; 100g tea or 40g tea extract; medicine for personal consumption and goods to the value of 175 per adult or 90 for children under 15 if arriving from non-EU countries. Strictly prohibited are poultry products from Asia.
